Most study plans are schedules — Monday 6pm: Chapter 4, Tuesday 8pm: problem set — and schedules are the part of studying that has never been the problem. The problem is that you sit down for Chapter 4 and realize you can't recall anything from Chapter 2, which you read eight days ago and highlighted enthusiastically but never tested yourself on. The forgetting curve is not a metaphor. Ebbinghaus measured it in the 1880s and every replication since has confirmed the shape: without retrieval practice, you lose roughly 70% of new material within 48 hours. Highlighting doesn't slow it. Re-reading barely dents it. The only thing that resets the curve is forcing your brain to retrieve the information — active recall — and doing so at increasing intervals — spaced repetition. A study plan that doesn't build both of those into the weekly rhythm is a to-do list dressed up as preparation.

This template does what a schedule can't: it makes the quality of your studying visible on a weekly basis. Spaced repetition is the engine — not a nice-to-have

The forgetting curve is steep and predictable: review a concept once and you retain roughly 30% a week later. Review it again at the right interval — one day, then three days, then a week, then two weeks — and each repetition flattens the curve until the memory is durable. This template builds spaced repetition into the daily tactic list rather than leaving it as a vague intention. Twenty minutes of flashcard review every morning, six days a week, is the minimum dose that keeps the curve working in your favor across a 12-week cycle. The weekly score catches the days you skipped — because two missed days in a row is enough to lose a week's worth of encoding, and you need to know that happened on Friday, not the night before the exam.

Active recall beats re-reading by a factor you won't believe

Cognitive science calls it the testing effect: retrieving information from memory strengthens the memory far more than re-exposing yourself to it. In practical terms, closing the textbook and writing down everything you remember about a topic — the 'blank page' test — produces more durable learning than reading the chapter twice with a highlighter. This template uses three forms of active recall as scored tactics: timed practice sets (the closest simulation of exam conditions), teaching a topic aloud from memory (which exposes gaps that passive review hides), and the blank-page test on past modules. None of these feel efficient while you're doing them — they're slower and harder than re-reading — which is exactly why they work. Difficulty during retrieval is the signal that learning is happening.

Time-blocking turns intentions into sessions

Studying for 'a few hours this week' is how you end up with forty minutes of distracted reading on Thursday night. The template asks for three 90-minute focused study sessions per week, time-blocked in your calendar before the week starts. Ninety minutes is the upper bound of a single focused session — beyond that, attention degrades and you're paying time for diminishing retention. The blocks should be specific: 'Tuesday 2–3:30pm, Module 6 active notes + flashcard creation,' not 'Tuesday afternoon: study.' If a block gets displaced by something urgent, it gets rescheduled within the same week, because the Friday score doesn't care about your reasons.

Weeks 10–12 are for retrieval, not new material

The coverage goal is deliberately set at week 9 so that the final three weeks are pure review, practice testing, and spaced repetition across the full syllabus. This is where the compound effect of twelve weeks of flashcard discipline pays off: cards you've seen six or seven times are now in long-term memory, and your practice sets are identifying the specific 10–15% of material that still needs drilling rather than revealing wholesale gaps.     Map the syllabus to 9 weeks

    List every module, topic, or chapter. Divide them across weeks 1–9 so that harder or larger modules get more time. Weeks 10–12 stay empty — they belong to full-syllabus review and practice testing.

    Set the exam goal and the coverage goal

    The exam goal is the lag measure (target score by the exam date). The coverage goal is the leading indicator: all modules completed by week 9, with active notes and flashcards created for each.

    Build the weekly tactic list

    Practice sets, daily flashcard review, teach-aloud sessions, weak-topic drills, study group, time-blocked sessions — each with a number and a cadence, each answerable yes/no on Friday.

    Start the flashcard deck on day one

    Create cards as you study each module, not after. Use question-and-answer format (not definitions), tag by module, and let the spaced-repetition intervals do the scheduling. Twenty minutes a day, six days a week.

    Score every Friday

    Completed tactics divided by planned tactics. 85%+ means the system is working. Below 80% for two consecutive weeks means one specific thing needs to change — a study block moved, a tactic resized, a distraction eliminated — not a wholesale plan rewrite.

    Checkpoint at week 6 and week 9

    Week 6: take a full-length practice exam under real conditions — this is your mid-cycle diagnostic, not a morale exercise. Week 9: confirm syllabus coverage is complete and shift to full-review mode for the final three weeks.
